Blog EntryA corner of my worldJun 25, '07 12:45 AM
for everyone

Alfred posted a blog on his night table, which I found intriguing. He is right... what we have surrounding us in our rest says a lot about who we are. I mentioned our unique 'bedside table' before, but for those new to my blog, here it is again.

Our bedroom is at the front of the house and takes up the width of the house. The houses here are long and narrow, a room and a passage in width. The main bedroom of this house is the room that faces the road. As you pull into the carport - there is no driveway as we know driveways, just the curb, the gate and the carport - you pull in with the nose of the car going in under the window. This is because the carports aren't big enough to hold an entire car. To accomodate the car, they build into the front room, creating a ledge under the window. I guess this could be used as seating, but for us, it became a bedside table.

The room is painted a lemony cream colour, like the rest of the house, a cheerful, yet soothing colour. In the photo, the window is above the ledge. Our bed lies in front of it. On the ledge are my treasures. The jewelry box my grandparents gave me when I turned 10. I remember so clearly being handed this large box and thinking in dismay that it was yet another doll or something. My heart just about burst when I saw the box. It had the twirling ballerina inside, dancing in circles to music on a mirror. The top is inlaid with swans. I love that box, though, sadly, its falling apart now.

In the corner is a basket holding a little gift bag from a friend back home, my brush, the recharge cord for my mp3 player, so that I can listen to my meditation recordings or music in bed, and a pencil for night time notes. Next to the basket is a box with Tweed perfume and talcum powder, which used to belong to my gran. I'm not sure why I still have it. Its just one of those things that have travelled with me over time. A few bottles of essential oil keep it company. Then there's my bottle of White Linen and some Vinolia talcum powder.

Draped over the lamp base is a necklace of sunstone. It is a very pretty stone with a copery colour. The stone actually glitters in the light with myriads of flecks of gold.

Sunstone

Sunstone was associated with the Sun during the Rennaissance because of its sparkling orange-gold hue. It was used by magicians to call upon the influences of the sun. It is a protective stone. Placed before a white candle, sunstone will spread protective energies throughout your home.
Symbolically, sunstone is linked to moonstone. Carry the two stones together to bring the influences of the Sun (Healing, Protection, Success) into harmony with those of the Moon (Love, Peace, Spirituality).

In front of my lamp is my quartz. I love that stone. Held up in the light, its flaws appear to be holding a fire. When I found that stone, the 'protected fire' was very symbolic to me.

The wooden candle holder was made for me by Jorge. Yep, that is a wine glass the candle is in, the last of a set. The design cut into the glass creates interesting reflections when the candle is lit. As you can see by the quantity of candles, I love candle light. Power outages are actually a pleasant time for me, as I then have an excuse to light candles everywhere.

Aside from the tissues, a night time necessity, there are the photos of Jorge, Tatiana and Ceinwen... the important people in my life. Of course, Jorge's side of the ledge holds an extension of what is on my side with the addition of his own personal treasures, such as the dog box... a little ceramic hinged box with a bulldog holding a bone on top. He keeps his rings in there. Keeping the dog company is his piggy bank. Jorge's piggy bank is a story all of its own *chuckles*
