for everyone

To some, art is a beautifully wrought candlestick. To others, a cheerful country scene hanging on their wall. The art I was trained in was sculpture and pottery, though I'm by no means talented at either. The sculpture photographed above was mine. I think its chief use in life was as a doorstop. It was, I am sure, tornado-proof. That thing weighed a ton.

Back to the subject.... my gran's florest arrangements were a work of art. You just have to spend time looking at the Japanese art of Ikebana to appreciate how art is woven into flowers. And on the subject of flowers, there is the art in growing flowers. To me, landscapers are artists; not to mention the ones that create entire scenes out of planted flowers. My gran used to say that the lines of Ikebana followed the lines of ballet, which brings me to another art form, dance.

There are the modern dancers, the ballet dancers, folk dancers, tap dancers, river dancers, flamenco... you get the picture. And speaking of pictures.... There are so many types of art in picture form. We think of paintings, 3D pictures, photography, grafitti, cartoons, illustrations. Again, the list goes on.

There is the art that many of us do at home. The carpentry (Jorge works miracles with wood when the mood is right), the crafts, the scrapbooking, the cake decorating, needlework. I could sit here all night listing them.

My questions to you are - What is art to you? What is your favourite art form? What is definitely not art?

This first video is an incredible work of art in itself. The research and pre-workup of the images must have taken ages. 500 Years of female portraits in Western art....

The next video is art too. Take a look. The process takes some surprising turns.

Another video, which is a must see. I don't know if any of you have watched sand art in progress. Its not so much even about the pictures in the sand (we're not talking sand castles here), but the movements of the hands in the creation process and the transition from one completely different scene to the next, so subtly that you're hardly aware its happening.

And finally, one of my favourite art forms. The written word. I'm happy to note that all on my friends list are artists. You all paint pictures of your loves and lives so clearly and so brilliantly. I can spend hours in this particular gallery :)
